EU AI Act
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence and amending Regulations (EC) No 300/2008, (EU) No 167/2013, (EU) No 168/2013, (EU) 2018/858, (EU) 2018/1139 and (EU) 2019/2144 and Directives 2014/90/EU, (EU) 2016/797 and (EU) 2020/1828 (Artificial Intelligence Act)
Published by European Parliament and Council of the European Union · Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, as amended by the Digital Omnibus on AI (Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, in force 27 July 2026) — general application from 2 August 2026, with high-risk obligations deferred to 2 December 2027 for Annex III standalone systems and 2 August 2028 for Annex I systems embedded in regulated products
Harmonised rules for the development, placing on the market, putting into service, and use of AI systems in the EU, using a risk-based approach: Chapter II prohibits certain AI practices outright, Chapter III sets requirements for high-risk AI systems, and Chapter V addresses general-purpose AI models.
How it’s structured
- 13 chapters and 113 articles
- 13 annexes, including the list of high-risk-system product categories and the technical documentation requirements
Who it applies to
Providers and deployers of AI systems or general-purpose AI models, plus importers, distributors, product manufacturers, and authorised representatives (Article 2) — applies regardless of whether the provider is established in the EU whenever the AI system's output is used in the EU.
